  • Details

Augmentin-duo suspension sugar-free with measuring device 35ml Why do I need this medicine? This medicine contains 2 types of medicines: amoxicillin and clavulanic acid.

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic. It is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, lungs, skin or bladder.

Clavulanic acid improves the the antibacterial activity and effectiveness of amoxicillin.
  • Directions

How do I take this medicine? Take Amoxicillin+Clavulanic acid exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take Amoxicillin+Clavulanic acid at regular intervals as instructed. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of antibiotic. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely.

It is best to take Amoxicillin+Clavulanic acid at the start of a meal or slightly before. This will help improve the absorption and minimise any stomach discomfort that might occur.

If you have been given tablets, swallow them whole with plenty of water.

If you have been given an oral suspension or syrup, shake the bottle well before use to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.

The oral suspension or syrup may be supplied in the form of a dry powder which needs to be mixed with water before use. Your pharmacist may do this for you, or she may teach you how to mix this up. Follow the instructions carefully. What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine? Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Can I take this with other medicines? Alert your doctor if you are taking a gout medicine called allopurinol or a blood-thinner called warfarin.

Inform your doctor if you are taking birth-control pills that contain oestrogen. Amoxicillin+Clavulanic acid may decrease the effectiveness of these pills. You may wish to discuss additional birth-control methods with your doctor or pharmacist.

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
How should I store this medicine? Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Refrigerate the oral suspension (between 2-8¶øC) once you have mixed the powder with water. Do not freeze it otherwise it will become less effective. Throw away any unused portion after 7days.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
  • Warnings

When should I not use this medicine? Alert your doctor if you have a history of allergic reactions (rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes) to similar antibiotics such as ampicillin, cloxacillin, penicillin V, sultamicillin or any other penicillin antibiotics.

Alert your doctor if you are allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics such as cefaclor, cefalexin or cefuroxime. Cephalosporins are related to penicillins and if you are allergic to cephalosporins, you may also be allergic to Amoxicillin+Clavulanic acid.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant. What should I take note of while using this medicine? Alert your doctor if you have:

    - kidney or liver disease
    - infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever)
    - problems passing urine regularly

If you are going for a liver function test, inform your doctor that you are taking Amoxicillin+Clavulanic acid as this medicine can interfere with the outcome of the test.

Amoxicillin+Clavulanic acid suspension contains aspartame and may not be suitable for you if you suffer from phenylketonuria. Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take? Avoid alcohol.

What side effects could I experience? You may have diarrhoea, nausea, stomach discomfort and stomach wind while being treated with Amoxicillin+Clavulanic acid. These side effects are usually mild and will get better with rest. If you have diarrhoea, drink lots of water to replace the fluids lost.

However, if you have severe diarrhoea or diarrhoea with severe stomach cramps, bloody stools or yellowing of your skin and mucous membranes, alert your doctor.

You may also develop oral thrush (a yeast infection of the mouth, vagina or skin) especially if you take Amoxicillin+Clavulanic acid over a long period of time. Let your doctor know if this happens as the problem can be treated.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
