Nurofen caplets 200mg 24 pack Why do I need this medicine? Promethazine is used to relieve allergic conditions, such as runny nose, sneezing, watery and itchy eyes, rashes and hives.

It also helps to relieve nausea and vomiting.

Promethazine also helps prevent travel sickness. It may also be used as a sleep aid for a short period of time.

Promethazine may be used to treat other conditions, as decided by your doctor.

How do I take this medicine? Take Promethazine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take Promethazine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day. Take it with a full glass of water.

You may stop taking Promethazine once you feel better, unless your doctor has instructed you otherwise. What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine? Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Can I take this with other medicines? Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, such as:

- antidepressants such as amitriptyline, imipramine, fluoxetine, moclobemide, selegiline, tranylcypromine
- sleeping pills or anxiety medicine such as alprazolam, lorazepam
- painkillers such as codeine, morphine, tramadol
- other antihistamines or cold medicines, such as chlorpheniramine, diphenhydramine, clemastine
- Parkinson's disease medicines
- travel sickness medicines
- malaria medicines

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription. How should I store this medicine? Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Keep away from light.

The syrup must be thrown away 1 month after opening the bottle.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

When should I not use this medicine? Alert your doctor if you are taking medicines for depression called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), or took them in the last 14 days. Some examples of MAOIs include moclobemide, selegiline and tranylcypromine.

Do not give Promethazine to children below 2 years old, as it can cause serious breathing problems in these children.

Do not give Promethazine to any child unless specifically instructed by the child's doctor or pharmacist. What should I take note of while taking this medicine? Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:

- lung problems such as asthma or bronchitis
- disrupted breathing during sleep
- heart, liver or kidney disease
- epilepsy (fits)
- Parkinson's disease
- glaucoma
- stomach or intestinal ulcers or obstruction
- enlarged prostate or difficulty in passing urine
- myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness disorder)
- diabetes

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not take Promethazine if you are breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Promethazine to a young child or elderly. Young children and elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects of Promethazine.

Do not give Promethazine to children and teenagers if they have:

- a recent illness or infection
- vomiting with unknown cause
- dehydration from excessive vomiting

Promethazine may mask the symptoms of undetected conditions like Reye's syndrome. If unsure, alert a doctor immediately.

Do not take Promethazine for more than 7 days without your doctor's advice. Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take? Avoid alcohol.

What side effects could I experience? Promethazine causes drowsiness and dizziness. If you feel drowsy or dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other common but minor side effects of Promethazine include: dry mouth, blurred vision, tiredness, headache, restlessness, nervousness, nightmares, confusion (especially in the elderly), loss of appetite, stomach upset, constipation. Alert your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or refuse to go away.

Promethazine may make you dizzy when you get up from a sitting or lying down position. To minimise this problem, stand up slowly.

Promethazine at high doses may make you more sensitive to sunlight. If this occurs, avoid direct sunlight and sun lamps. When outdoors, you may also use sun protection such as hats, umbrellas, long-sleeved shirts, long pants and sunblock.

Some side effects are rare but may be more serious. If you experience any of these side effects, stop taking Promethazine and alert your doctor:

- itch, swelling or rashes
- chest tightness or difficulty breathing
- faintness
- rapid or irregular heartbeat
- muscle stiffness or shaking
- uncontrolled movement of the muscles in your head or face, or other parts of the body
- yellowing of the skin or eyes

Alert your doctor if you experience any other side effects while being treated with Promethazine. Also inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsen while taking Promethazine.
